Driving With Dogs

Often you will see people driving with dogs and sometimes you may wonder whether the dogs which are taking a ride in the car find it fun and feel happy or they take it as nothing other than a nerve-wrecking experience. Dogs can have their own reasons to classify the journey as a pleasant or a horrible experience, which mainly depends on the actions of the dog and car owner. To understand this, let's assume that you use your car to take your dog to a vet more often than you use it to take your dog to parks or beaches. In such conditions there is big possibility that your dog would not enjoy riding in a car.

So, it's very important to make the experience of driving in a car very pleasant for your dog from the beginning itself. It is advised to drive a new pet home instead of making it suffer in a crate until it reaches your home. This will be the first good introduction of your dog to your car. Besides, you should also ask a family member or a friend to sit beside and cuddle your dog to make him comfortable on his first drive in a car.

Within the few first days of taking him home, go for a fun drive with your dog to a park or a beach. This will make it easier for the dog to associate a drive in the car to all the good things. You should also make sure that your dog is not feeling uncomfortable on the drive by lowering down your stereo volume and by constantly talking to him.

Try to figure out whether your dog is a victim of motion sickness and if you find this to be true, take the help of a vet in selecting the right kind of anti-nausea medications for him. You can further help your dog out of this problem by letting him get cozy with the car while the car is still. While he is in the car, praise him and offer various treats. Then start with short road trips that take him to fun places.

Do not experiment with the dog food while you are on a road trip with your dog. A sudden switch in the variety of dog food can most probably upset the stomach of your dog, which you will definitely not appreciate. You should also avoid feeding your dog right before leaving for and in between the trip. A running car and a dog with full stomach is really a very bad combination, so avoid it. Feed him almost 3-4 hours before starting your journey and if you need to feed him again on the road, do stop your car first.

There are certain things that you should pack while on a trip with your dog, which will make the drive fun, safe and a pleasant experience for your dog as well for you

  • Odour and stain remover
  • Paper towels
  • Seat covers
  • Poop Bags
  • A bowl
  • Some Treats
  • Water
  • A safety harness
  • A crate or a barrier
  • Toys and bedding

Remember that driving with dogs should not be a burden for yourself and not for your pet as well. It should be an enjoyable moment for everyone and one which will bring your dog closer to you.
