Companies which let you build no claims bonus as a named driver

A named driver is a person who is legally allowed to drive the same vehicle as the main driver and whose name has been registered on the car insurance policy for that particular vehicle. The main driver of the car is the one who will be using the car the most and will therefore become the policyholder. You can add other drivers on the insurance policy and they will become the second, third, fourth driver etc. The additional drivers are referred to as the named drivers on the policy. As an example, the dad of a family can become the policyholder and the wife, son and daughter can declare themselves as the named drivers. However it is always better to limit the number of additional drivers on the insurance policy so that your insurance quote is kept to a minimum.

Depending on the number of years of no claims bonus that you have, you will get a discount on your premiums accordingly which will enable you to make huge savings through the cheaper insurance quote that you will receive. Most insurance companies give the no claims discount only to the main driver/policyholder though. So if a son has been driving on his dad's policy, he will have not have any no-claims bonus when he takes out car insurance in his own name. There are however a few companies out there which will allow you to earn NCD (no claims discount) even as a named driver.

Which car insurance companies allow named drivers to earn no claims bonnus?

If you know you are going to be a named driver on an insurance policy, then it is wise to find out beforehand whether you will get the no claims discount afterwards. Below is a list of companies where named drivers can earn no claim bonus (NCB):

Please be aware that not all of the insurance companies above will give you full no claims bonus as a named driver and you should therefore check with the respective company prior to purchasing your insurance policy. Moreover, this type of NCB is not transferrable, so you will have to stay with the same insurer to take advantage of it.

If I'm a named driver on a parents insurance and I build my own no claims, if i claim off the insurance, does it affect the policy owners no claims?

The named driver NCD expires after the policy ends. For Direct Line I believe it is 90 days and Privilige only 7 days. We had a policy with Direct Line which we suspended after someone wrote off the car (not my daughter's fault!). She went abroad for a year. Later, when she tried to use the NCD she'd built up, they said it had expired.
