The device that is installed for the pay as you go insurance is a Global Positioning System (GPS) which is used to know your whereabouts and the journeys that you make.
The process is that as soon as you signed up for pay as you go, Norwich Union will arrange for the GPS device to be fitted to your car and once that is done, they will be able to tell how many miles you've done and at what time and then charge you accordingly every month.
When Norwich Union first launched this type of policy, the device was made available for about £50 but afterwards they started offering for free to attract more people. So you don't have to pay for the device.
Whilst under the pay as you drive policy, you are required to keep this GPS device fitted to your car and failure to do that is a breach of contract. However if you have left the company and have returned to a normal policy, you are free to remove the device from your car.
I will like to note that since mid June 2008, the Pay As You Go insurance policy has been removed by Norwich Union because it has not proved to be a very popular policy amongst drivers. Therefore, this type of insurance is no longer available!
